Google accounted for half of all U.S. searches conducted in April according to data released by Nielsen//NetRatings yesterday. Google was followed by Yahoo! and MSN with 22 percent and 11 percent of searches, respectively. Google also gained three percentage points in market share year over year, while Yahoo! remained flat and MSN dipped slightly. Google and Yahoo! search have grown significantly over the past year with Google growing 34 percent followed by Yahoo! with 27 percent growth. MSN search grew 10 percent.
“Google has passed a significant milestone in April, garnering half of the searches in the U.S.,” says Michael Lanz, vice president, search industry solutions, Nielsen//NetRatings. He also commented, “We can continue to expect new features, improved functionality and rewards programs from the top search providers as they compete to win consumers’ loyalty. There is also opportunity for smaller providers to fulfill targeted search needs.”
Nielsen also released data demonstrating that consumers are increasingly using the Internet to connect to major retail stores, which illustrates the influence of search on online and offline purchasing. “Home Depot” and “Wal-Mart” were the number one and number two search terms in this category, respectively. “Home Depot” had nearly 2.5 million searches, and “Wal-Mart” had 2.3 million searches during April.
